Each source is prepared once, then reels are assembled by copying. That is why a reel takes a third of a second instead of a minute, and why the picture is exactly what came out of the camera.
Every combination has a number, and the app walks the numbers. It does not generate and then check for duplicates; duplicates simply cannot happen.
The slider stops at the real ceiling — the smaller of the combinations that exist and the reels that fit on your disk. You cannot order more than is possible.
The app pulls key frames out of your sources and writes an edit map next to every reel — which piece came from where, and the exact second of each cut. Ready for captions and voice-over.
